Home the next day and back in the game just weeks after knee replacement surgery
Warren Pettaway of Detroit knew he needed to have his left knee checked out when he could no longer keep up while officiating basketball. The pain got so bad that running up and down the court or quickly changing directions was too much for him to continue doing what he loved.
After talking to several people who had gone through knee replacement surgery and doing his own research, the 63-year-old decided it was time to talk to a doctor. He says he was fortunate to find Michael Charters, M.D., a fellowship trained joint replacement surgeon at Henry Ford Hospital.

After speaking with Dr. Charters he was able to ease all my fears about the procedure. Dr. Charters spent a lot time with me going through the procedure, he made me feel like I was his only patient. By - Karen Sanders-Previous to hip surgery, I had a femur break, which did not heal properly and rod in femur broke. Was referred to Dr. Charters and Dr. Hoegler (femur doctor) at Henry Ford. They determined that a hip replacement would be a better fix than attempting another rod. Dr. Hoegler took out old rod. A week later, Dr. Charters did replacement. Wonderful! Walking without limp. No pain. Best I have been in six years. Would absolutely recommend Dr. Charters! No hesitation at all.

By - William Pirrami-Very good experience . This is my second knee surgery,first one done at the same hospital. The recovery this time was phenomenal. I had to use very little pain meds, and was off a walker and onto a cane in 3 weeks, fully ambulatory in 5 weeks. I believe that this is largely due to the new protocol of intraoperative and perioperative pain medicaltion as well as the excellent pre op and post op management. Less bruising/ leg pain, less nausea. The staff was also caring and courteous.

He had x-rays and pertinent information. Dr. Charters checked with me before surgery. The HFH knee replacement pre-surgery meetings were excellent. It's a big surgery, but I felt well informed and prepared. Dr. Charters checked in with me after surgery, walked me down the hallway, and posed for a photo. Follow up has been very good.

By - Darlene Dukes-From the moment we met Dr. Charters and his team, we were put at ease. The whole surgery from pre op visits to post op was a breeze. My recovery was great, very little pain and I was walking the same day, after the surgery he came up to the floor before he left to check on me and HE got me out of bed to walk! Talk about personal touch, he really takes pride in his work. I'm not walking like a old man of 60, I'm walking like a young man of 60! Just had my follow up visit and returning to work.

Dr Charters took very good care of me when I was brought in the ER with a fractured hip. He explained everything that I was going through and what was going to happen.
